Choosing the right training provider can make the difference between a ticket that gets you hired and one that doesn't open any doors. Not all RTOs are created equal — some have strong industry connections, others have outdated equipment, and a few are outright dodgy.
Here's what to look for and which providers have solid reputations across Australia.
What Makes a Good Mining RTO?
Before we dive into specific providers, here's what separates the good from the average:
Key Quality Indicators
- Real equipment — Training on actual mining machinery, not just simulators
- Industry connections — Relationships with mining companies and recruiters
- Experienced trainers — Instructors with genuine mining backgrounds
- Job placement support — Help with resumes, interview prep, job leads
- Site recognition — Tickets that mining companies actually accept
- Adequate time — Enough hours to build genuine competency
Avoid RTOs that: Promise guaranteed jobs, offer tickets in unrealistically short timeframes, have no actual equipment for practical training, or pressure you into expensive packages with financing.

What to Ask Before Enrolling
Questions for Any Training Provider
- What equipment will I train on? (Real machines vs simulators)
- How many hours of practical training are included?
- What's the trainer's mining industry experience?
- Do you offer job placement assistance?
- Which mining companies recognise your tickets?
- What's your completion/pass rate?
- Can I speak to past graduates?
- What's included in the price? (PPE, assessments, re-sits)
Package Deals: Worth It?
Many RTOs offer "complete mining packages" bundling multiple tickets together. Here's when they make sense:
Good Package Value
- Genuine discount vs individual ticket prices
- Tickets that complement each other (RDT + FEL + Water Cart)
- Includes Standard 11 and first aid
- Job placement support included
Poor Package Value
- Tickets you won't use or can't get experience on
- Excessive financing charges
- Pressure to buy more than you need
- "Guaranteed job" claims (no one can guarantee this)
Start with one or two core tickets (haul truck + loader). Get a job, build experience, then use your income to add more tickets. Don't go $15K into debt for tickets before you've earned your first mining dollar.
